Anand beats Gelfand - Rapid Game Two & the Whole Shebang.
Catching the second of four rapid games this morning broadcast live from Tretyakovskaya Galleria, Moscow, I was struck by how long Boris Gelfand thought in the position after Vishy played 14. Nc3. In that position he had maybe already lost 10 minutes to Anand, he was underdeveloped, and they had been testing this opening throughout the tournament (See game 10 and to a lesser degree game 12).
I was rooting for Gelfand throughout mainly because he comes across as very affable. All in all, Anand seems to be a solid if boring champion. Maybe if FIDE could straighten out the Candidates we might get some more dynamic results in the WC. Below is the deciding game, and one of the most exciting games of the match.
Readers’ puzzle:
The best commentary unfortunately for you, the reader, was done by Sergey Karjakin in Russian on the FIDE website. Some ICC kibitzers were shocked after 16. …Rxd6 that Anand didn’t scarf the pawn on g7. I leave it to the reader to conjure the nice line Karjakin gave as a possible refutation for black.
